(909)SKA BIO

The (909)SKA tale begins...................................

909SKA began in the summer of 2002 by me (909SKA Brent) 3/30/87.The reason for starting 909SKA was because 1:I was board that summer, 2: I could put my personal ska pictures on the web for people to see, and 3: nobody was really representing the SKA scene in the Inland Empire. So I felt that it had to be done.

My first taste of SKA music was in 1991 when my brother (17 at the time) and I shared a bedroom and he would be spinning these odd but cool sounding records that I have never heard of. Hearing the records countless times when you are little, it tends to stick. Especially this song called "MONKEY MON" by the SPECIALS (originally done by TOOTS and the MAYTALS). There I was 4yrs of age, running around my house-screaming MONKEY MON, MONKEY MON! Then I noticed when my brother would go to shows he would always wear this black; 3-button suite, and a black hat with a one-inch brim (trillby hat) and black dress shoes. It was very confusing at times because of the age I was in. I didn't even know the name of this catchy style of music. I just classified it as rock with horns.

Well, the as the years went on, so did my musical interests. I was fully hooked on the sounds of Seattle known as Grunge. I loved bands like NIRVANA, STONE TEMPLE PILOTS, and GREEN DAY. Then 1998 hit and it was time for the Yearly ORANGE BLOSOOM FESTIVAL in Riverside. My sister was begging my friend and I to go with her to see a band that our brother used to go see back in the day called the SKELETONES.So I went to the stage 15 minutes before they went on and I started to have flashbacks because I saw about a 100 people wearing the same exact suites that my brother used to wear back in the day. So I figure that this has something to do with this type of music. Then I hear this screaming of over 3,000 people as the SKELETONES go up on the stage with their VESPA SCOOTERS. The whole band was dressed up and playing their hearts out. I was amazed and happy because this was the music I was hearing in my bedroom 7 years ago. So I ran over to this guy who was wearing a flight jacket with a bunch of patches on it and asked him what kind of music is this and he replied with this, "Its called SKA dude". From that day on, I was hooked. I shelved all my grunge stuff and bought as many SKA CDs as I possibly could. My very first SKA CD was LETS GO BOWLING'S "MR.TWIST".

I Listened to every kind of SKA there is including 2-tone and 3rd wave. Then the summer of 2001 hit and once again my musical tastes changed. I went to this show at the Riverside Barn because it said in the paper that there would be a local SKA show held there. I was expecting it to be like the fast poppy style of SKA.Was I wrong because it turned out to be a Traditional SKA/REGGAE show. Now I was familiar with this style but it never really interested me because of the speed. I wanted to jump around and act crazy but that wasn't the case for that night. As I was at the show, somebody told me that this band called The DEBONAIRES was from Riverside was playing that night at the show. I knew (of) this band because I would always see them in the newspapers and for some reason in my head I always thought that they were a PUNK band. Anyway I thought that it was cool that they were a SKA band from Riverside so I checked them out. The stage they played on was so small and the band was so big . There was SO MANY HORNS and I thought that these guys have to be awesome (Horns rock!) The Front man which I noticed very quickly plays saxophone for the SKELETONES.The front man of the DEBONIARES(KIP)shouts "ROCK FORT ROCK" and the 6-piece horn section blows the first note. Now I was standing in front of the horns and when they blew the first note I was blown back about 5 feet because the force of the horns was so strong. Being a horn fan I fell in love with the Traditional style because I felt that the horn lines were more technical than 3rd wave or 2-tone. For 2-tone and 3rd wave, there wasns't really that much harmonizing in the horns and singing part. So from there on, I love the sweet 60s style of JAMAICAN SKA.Then I explored more early sounds of Jamaican music like ROCKSTEADY; (SKINHEAD STYLE) REGGAE, AND DUB.I will hear many types of music in my life. Some will come and go and the others will stay. In my heart, only one music will always stay, and that is SKA
